What is a Verb?

A verb is a word that describes an action, occurrence, or state of being. Verbs are essential parts of sentences, as they convey what the subject is doing or experiencing. There are several types of verbs:

Action Verbs:

These verbs show physical or mental actions.

For example:

  • Run
  • Jump

  • Think
  • Eat

Linking Verbs:

These verbs connect the subject with more information about it. Common linking verbs include:

  • Be (is, am, are, was, were)
  • Become
  • Seem

Helping Verbs:

Also known as auxiliary verbs, these verbs help the main verb express tense or mood. Examples include:

  • Have
  • Will
  • Can
  • Should

How to Identify a Verb in a Sentence

Here are some simple steps to identify a verb:

Look for Actions:

Ask yourself what action is taking place in the sentence. For example, in the sentence "The dog barks," "barks" is the action.

Check for a State of Being:

If you see forms of "to be" (is, am, are, was, were), those are linking verbs. For example, in the sentence "She is happy," "is" links the subject "she" to the adjective "happy."

Identify the Subject:

Find the subject of the sentence (who or what the sentence is about). The verb will usually follow the subject. For example, in "The cat sleeps," "cat" is the subject, and "sleeps" is the verb.

Ask Questions:

Use questions to find the verb. For instance, in the sentence "They will travel tomorrow," ask, "What will they do?" The answer is "travel," which is the verb.

Example Sentences

Action Verb: "The children play in the park." (Play is the verb.)
Linking Verb: "He is a teacher." (Is is the verb.)
Helping Verb: "She has finished her homework." (Has is the helping verb, and finished is the main verb.)
